Imlach half-century lifts Guyana to first win

SANTA CRUZ, Jamaica, CMC – Opener Tevin Imlach stroked an unbeaten half-century as Guyana rebounded from an opening round loss to beat Trinidad and Tobago by three wickets here yesterday.

Playing in their second round match of the Regional Under-19 Championship, Guyana overcame a few bumps before successfully chasing down an uncomplicated target of 155.

Imlach stroked 61 while Parmanand Ramdhan chipped in with 27, and they held the innings together as wickets fell around them at St. Elizabeth Technical High School.

Guyana were faltering badly on 61 for five in the 18th over before Imlach fueled two partnerships to consolidate the run chase.

Imlach and Ramdhan posted 55 for the sixth wicket, with the latter facing 23 balls and striking four fours and a six.

When he perished in the 28th over, Imlach added a further 32 for the seventh wicket with Balchan Baldeo whose 11 proved invaluable.

All told, Imlach lasted 119 deliveries and counted eight fours, and was there at the end to see his side over the line.

Fast bowler Akil Seetal claimed three for 34 while seamer Anderson Phillip supported with two for 30.

Earlier, T&T managed 154 for eight off 50 overs with Cephas Cooper striking 46 and Keagan Simmons striking 32.

T&T were slumping at 54 for five in the 20th over before Cooper and Simmons combined in a 54-run, sixth wicket stand to restore respectability to the innings.

Akshaya Persaud (2-17) and Sherfayne Rutherford (2-26) finished with two wickets apiece.
