Guyana women sweep Cayman Islands 5-0

Guyana got the defence of their female team title off to the perfect start, sweeping hosts the Cayman Islands 5-0 in their opening group encounter when the Caribbean Squash Association Championships Team Tourney continued yesterday.

With their male counterparts losing their opening fixture to Jamaica in defence of their title, the female side got off to the perfect start as Ashley deGroot overcame Eilidh Bridgeman 8-11, 11-7, 11-3 and 11-8 in the first round.

It would then become 2-0 as Larissa Wiltshire downed Lara Conolly 11-7, 11-3 and 11-7 in the second fixture. Ashley Khalil then sealed the win in the third match of the five-round contest, downing Marlene West 11-6, 12-10 and 12-10.

Guyana then completed the clean sweep in the fourth and fifth rounds as Mary Fung-A-Fat defeated Samantha Hennings 12-10, 13-11, 7-11 and 11-5 while Akeila Wiltshire dismissed Jackie Geils 11-7, 12-10 and 11-9 respectively. With the win, Guyana will now face off with Bermuda in their final group fixture.

Similarly the men’s team will return to action today when they oppose the same opponent in their final group fixture. Meanwhile in the veteran’s section, Guyana went down to Trinidad and Tobago by a 4-1 margin.

Taking the lead after Zanilta Disalle defeated Diane Julien 11-4, 11-8 and 11-8 in their Women 40+ matchup, Guyana would suffer defeat in their second match as John Holley won via walkover in the Men’s 50+ section.

Trinidad and Tobago then took a 2-1 lead in the Men’s 40+ matchup as Paul Deverteuil defeated Ramon Chan-A-Sue 6-11, 11-8, 11-8 and 12-10.

They would then take an unassailable lead in the fourth round as Richard Hunt defeated Alwyn Callender 11-6, 11-4 and 12-10 in the Men’s 60+ fixture. The Trinidadians then sealed the score as Rufaro Celestine won via walkover in the Women’s 50+ fixture.
