George ran 45.25s in heat 6 which was won by South Africa’s Wade Van Niekerk in 44.42s to better his previous mark of 45.57s which was posted at the Adidas Diamond League meet in New York in June.

Once the 29-year-old continues to improve, it is quite possible that he can run sub-45 at the Olympic Games in Brazil next year.

Meanwhile, Guyana’s other representative at the Championships, Andrea Foster placed eighth (last) in heat 5 of the 800m event yesterday. Foster, 18, clocked 2m: 17.39s, way off her personal best of 2m: 14.76s which was recorded five months ago in Trinidad.

Her heat was won by Germany’s Fabienne Kohlmann in 2m: 01.42s, almost 16 seconds faster.
