O’Neil wants Salazar here on Independence Day

If the number one world ranked female heavyweight boxer, Gwendolyn ‘Stealth Bomber’ O’Neil and her management team have their way, a world title bout involving her will take place here next Independence Day.

This is according to the Brooklyn based O’Neil (19-7-1) who is currently vacationing in Guyana along with her Golden Bow and Arrow managers.

The UBF and WIBA world heavyweight champion visited this publication yesterday and stated that after a non-title fight in December, the aim is to challenge WBC heavyweight champion Martha ‘The Shadow’ Salazar (13-4) for her crown.

“Salazar has the belt she wants and after a warm up, we are going after that” said one of O’Neil’s managers, Basil Boyce.

In the same breath, Boyce noted that adequate support is needed for the soon to be 46-year old.

“The opportunity to bring a fight here will make us feel very proud. If we can bring international fights to Guyana it will do so much for sports tourism, but we would need that support from the government and other stakeholders.”

Another member of the ‘Stealth Bomber’s management team, Ancil Arthur revealed that they are positioning the five-time champion to be the face of the female boxing.

“She is already Guyana’s top boxer but we want her to be the top dog in the sport and shine a light on what she accomplished. We want her to be the Ronda Rousey of boxing.”

Arthur added that big things may be in store for the mother of five as Golden Bow and Arrow are in talks with Under Armour to land O’Neil a contract.

Under Armour recently passed Adidas to become America’s second-best seller of sportswear, behind Nike.

Tom Brady, Misty Copeland, Stephen Curry and Jordan Spieth are some of the big names under contracts by the company.

Said Boyce “Gwendolyn is capable of running seven miles a day, she is in great shape and would make a great ambassador for Under Armour.”

O’Neil who won the UBF title in July is scheduled to depart on Tuesday to open camp at the Green Studios Gym in Brooklyn ahead of her ring date (opponent yet to be named) sometime in December. (Emmerson Campbell)
