Heavyweights Alpha, Conquerors clash in Stag Beer Elite League

It will be a clash of the heavyweights when second placed Fruta Conquerors opposes fourth placed side Alpha United today in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Stage Beer Elite League competition at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground from 20:00hrs.

The Tucville-based unit relinquished their grip on the top of the standings following their 2-2 draw against the Guyana Defence Force in an earlier fixture and will attempt to get back on track come kick off time. They will once again look to the likes of Eon Alleyne, Trevon Lythcott, Kwame LaFleur, Jermin Junior, Dwayne Lindy and Delon Williams to power them to victory over the old enemy.

However, with a 2-0 win in their last fixture, Alpha United will look to maintain their momentum as they strive to secure the top spot in the standings.

The signing of Dwayne Lawrence has added to their fire power while the combination of Daniel Wilson, Kithson Bain and Quincy Madramootoo have improved since the start of the championship. A similar effort will be required if they are to emerge victorious on the night.

According to Alpha United coach Wayne Dover:“The expectation is the same which is to win because at the end of the day we got register wins to keep ourselves in the top bracket and by winning our next game, it will put us in either first or second place depending on the other results and goal difference.

“A win will put us at the top of the league and that is where we want to be as the league is in its fourth game. We have been doing our own assessment of teams and teams have been assessing us and we will be working to capitalize on the weakness of opponents to get the result we are looking for,” he added.

Dover said they have been doing their homework.

“We are going to prepare for what we saw in the last game Fruta Conquerors played both in defence and offence and I am very optimistic,” he added.

Fruta Conquerors coach Calvin Allen said:“Like always, with every game we are preparing mentally and physically to come victorious. Having said that, we know Alpha’s position and they defeated us last year in the NAMILCO semi-final so we would like to return the favour.

“We know it’s not going to be an easy match or a one-sided affair but we are looking for the three points after dropping points against GDF, a match which we should have won.” In the opening fixture at 18:00hrs, cellar occupants Buxton United, led by the duo of Clive Andries and Denver Dennis, will attempt to secure their first points of the campaign when they oppose sixth placed Monedderlust FC and their led by the likes of Travis Henry, Kevin Cottoy and Kevin Layne Jr.

Buxton United coach Herbert McPherson in an invited comment said:“Most naturally we have to go back to the drawing board. We have to counter the speed that Monedderlust plays with. Currently we are using a 4-3-3 system and we will continue to use this system and try to work from there.

“We expect a tough game and we have to go into our recovery period and try to get ourselves prepared. We are very fit physically not mentally and we have to work on that as well,” he added.

Similarly, Head-Coach of Monedderlust Gordon Brathwaite said:“I think it will be a good game, they are looking for points, and it’s not much of a big difference between us. It’s the first time they would have conceded three goals in the tournament and they will come out looking for their first win.

“We are not a big team, it will be a tight game and they will be going for a win. It will be hard and we have to war if we want to win.”
