De Groot wins Handicap Squash tourney

Peter-Michael DeGroot was crowned the Open division champion of the Lucozade Handicap Squash tournament, battling to a 2-1 victory over Taylor Fernandes yesterday in the final at the Georgetown Club facility.

Entering the match with a (-8) handicap, DeGroot claimed the first set over Fernandes (+8) by a 15/13 margin.

However, the deficit proved to be a bridge too far for DeGroot in the second set as Fernandes survived a 6-0 run with the score on 14/7 to ground out the win, setting up an intriguing finish in the process.

Nonetheless the final set would be all about the eventual champ as he erased the deficit with eight consecutive points, to setup the 15/12 victory. In the third place playoff, Nyron Joseph defeated Reagan Pollard in straight sets 2-0.

In other results, Ben Mekdeci (-13) defeated Michael Atherly (+10) 2-1 (0/15, 15/11, 16/14 while Ethan Jonas (-3) downed Kirsten Gomes (+3) in straight sets (15/12, 15/10).

Also securing wins were Ashley DeGroot, Michael Alphonso and Kamir Khan. DeGroot in her matchup, crushed Jonathan Fernandes (+10) in straight sets 2-0 (15/10, 15/10). On the other hand, Alphonso (-2) dismissed Collins in straight sets 2-0 (15/13, 15/11).

Meanwhile, Khan crushed Baksh in the straight games 2-0 (15/5, 15/7). On Saturday evening at the same locale, Peter-Michael DeGroot squeaked past Pollard 2-1 (12/15, 15/1, 15/10) while Fernandes downed Joseph 2-1 (12/15, 15/-2, 15/4).

Similarly, Mekdeci defeated Ashley DeGroot (13/15, 15/5, 18/16). In the other results of the night, Maya Collins beat Dominic Collins 2-0 (15/8, 15/3) while Demetrius DeAbreu edged Michael Alphonso 2-1 (8/15, 15/5, 15/4) and Michael Atherly downed Jonathan Fernandes 2-0 (15/8, 15/5).

The final two results witnessed Ethan Jonas defeating Mohryan Baksh 2-0 (15/12, 15/9) and Kamir khan dismissing Haley Carpenter 2-0 (15/10, 15/3).
