The UG Wolves ran away with the GRFU/Trophy Stall 7s Championship trophy, beating the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ruggers 17-12 in a physical final yesterday at the UG Campus ground.

Captain Rondell ‘Bull’ McArthur shepherded the wolves with military efficiency and was backed up by speedy winger Godfrey Broomes, Jamal Angus, Ryan Dey and Lance Adonis which enabled the student ruggers to howl to victory against the Dwayne Schroeder-led outfit.

Two tries by star winger Broomes, a conversion by Adonis and a try by Angus was enough to brush aside the rugged military men.

Tries by national players Patrick King and Avery Corbin along with a Schroeder conversion could not get the job done for GDF to retain their trophy.

Corbin was, however, the standout player yesterday and earned the MVP award.

“The victory for our team means a lot,” said Captain McArthur in a post-match interview with media operatives.

“This is the first time we played a tournament on our home turf and we won this championship. It was very challenging because all these teams especially GDF came here today hungry for the championship.

“I must take my hat off to the guys, we have improved tremendously under coach Laurie Adonis,” he added.

Before the men’s final, the over 35 female team dominated their rivals to take home the spoils on the distaff side.

Rugby action continues next week with the hosting of the Banks 7s. The Wolves are the defending champions.
