Pele looks to solidify position

League leader Pele will oppose Monedderlust FC while Fruta Conquerors will tackle the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) when the sixth round in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Stag Beer Elite League concludes today at the GFC ground. Pele will attempt to solidify their position in the standing when they oppose a resurging Monedderlust FC in opening fixture at 18:00hrs. The Georgetown giant will be in a confident mood following their hard-fought win over fierce rivals Fruta Conquerors in their last fixture.

Gregory Richardson continues to be event’s undisputed star, leading the tourney’s best offence alongside the foursome of Deon Alfred, Omallo Williams, Ronel Gordon and Julian Joseph with five of their 10 goals scored. A similar showing will be expected once more from their talisman.

On the defensive end, Pele has let in six goals thus far and will want to improve in this area going forward into the latter stages of the championship.

Meanwhile, the Berbicians will also be buoyed for the contest after claiming a win in their prior encounter. Kevin Cottoy leads a capable attacking line inclusive of Atlyn Browne, Kevin Sullivan and Kelvin Joseph which has scored six goals to date. Defensively, Monedderlust must improve as they have conceded the most goals in the event with nine. Captain Travis Henry alongside the young Kevin Layne Jr. will be critical in this regard if they are to secure the win.    In the feature contest, home side and seventh positioned GFC will renew their budding rivalry with fourth placed Fruta Conquerors from 20:30hrs.

Suffering a hard-fought loss in their earlier fixture, the Bourda based unit will attempt secure their second win in the event when play commence.

Going down 2-1 in their earlier matchup, the hosts must improve from the attacking standpoint as they have netted the four goals to date. Mikhail Stewart, Kurt Johnson and Dwayne Fordyce have been threatening for the home side and much more will be expected of them.

Similar improvements must be achieved on the defensive end for GFC as they have conceded seven times despite the exploits of the experienced duo of Linden Pickets and custodian Derick Carter.

On the other hand, the numbers are similar for Fruta Conquerors who are currently on a two game losing streak.

Presently the Tucville based giant has scored six goals, with Eon Alleyne being the standout performer with one goal and three assists alongside Dennis Edwards who has netted twice.

If a positive result is to be attained, much more is needed from the likes of Jermin Junior, Daniel Favourite, Kwame LaFleur and Antony ‘Sugar’ Abrams.

On the other side, Fruta Conquerors have recorded five goals to date, with Kwame La Fleur leading the count with two conversions followed by Eon Alleyne, Trevon Lythcott and Dennis Edwards scoring once.

Defensively, Fruta Conquerors have conceded as much their opponent and must improve in this regards. The combination of veteran duo Delon Williams and Lennox Charles have been inconsistent along with custodian Alex ‘Scotland Youth’ Murray between the uprights.

The re-introduction of Captain Trevon Lythcott, Dwayne Lindy and Rafael Edwards from injuries and suspension will improve their showing in this area.

Winner of the round will pocket $4,000,000 while the second, third and fourth place teams will collect $2,000,000, $1,000,000 and $500,000 respectively. Similarly, the point’s leader prior to the knockout stage in the League Genesis round will pocket an additional $1,000,000.
