DCC win Carib Beer T20 competition

All-rounder Sherfane Rutherford and Kevon Boodie helped engineer a 30-run win for the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) over the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) boys in Saturday’s Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Carib Beer T20 finals.

Played at the hosts home turf at the DCC ground, Rutherford clobbered three fours and three sixes in his 20-ball 37, also picking up two wickets, while Boodie who was in top form with the bat during the recently concluded Guyana Jaguars practice match, grafted 40 runs from as many balls in a 63 run partnership as DCC chalked up 170 all out from 19.5 overs.

National pacer Ronsford Beaten (3-36) and West Indies batsman Leon Johnson (2-29) were the successful wicket-takers for GCC who in reply to were restricted to 140-8 in 20 overs with Bajan Raymon Reifer top-scoring with 38, Robin Bacchus (21) and Elon Fernandes (20). Senior spinner Dennis Squires and National under U15 skipper, left-arm spinner Ashmead Nedd, also snapped out two wicket as they collectively help their team defend 30 runs off the final over.

GCC lost Vishaul Singh (4) and Johnson (5) along with Jeetendra Sookdeo in quick succession. The two left-handers, Bacchus and Reifer batted well and launched a counter-attack but fell to Squires.

Ronaldo AliMohamed (0) was bowled by Nedd but a brief glimmer of hope given by Raj Nannan (17) and Fernandes (21) before Rutherford sent the latter packing.

Earlier DCC opener Brian Sattaur, who hit a six was run out for 10 and given a life by Anthony Adams who missed a caught and bowled opportunity, while Jamal Hickson succumbed to Beaton for 1 run.

The competition’s leading run getter Chris Barnwell (10), was cheaply bowled by left-arm spinner Devon Lord, flinging DCC into dismay at 43-3.

The national youth all-rounder Rutherford, then joined forces with Boodie who continued where he left off in the practice match, was bowled by Johnson while West Indies U19 all-rounder Kemo Paul was knocked over by Beaton for a brisk 36 from 15 balls.
