Fruta snaps losing streak with 1-0 win over Monedderlust

Fruta Conquerors halted their three- game losing streak in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Stag Beer Elite League, squeaking past Monedderlust FC by a 1-0 score line on Tuesday at the Camp Ayanganna ground.

Unlike their previous encounter which ended 2-1 controversially in the favour of Tucville unit, Jermin Junior secured the vital three points in the hard-fought contest with a sixth-minute conversion.

With the win, Fruta Conquerors move into the fourth position with 11 points while Monedderlust

Desperate for a positive result following a torrid three-game stretch, the Georgetown unit got off to the perfect start six minutes into the action as Junior blasted his shot past the keeper after collecting the ball within the left side of the penalty box.

The goal seemed to settle the nerves of the Tucville side who should have doubled their lead in the 25th minute as Kwame LaFleur was denied from within the centre of the box one-on-one with the keeper, after racing past the final defender to latch onto a bouncing ball.

Junior then almost added to his tally in the 30th minute, unleashing a 26-yard curling freekick from the centre of the field which was tipped over the crossbar by the custodian.

Dennis Edwards was the next party guilty of wasting an opportunity to increase Fruta Conquerors’ lead, striking his effort straight at the shot-stopper unchallenged after an initial Eon Alleyne left-sided free kick fell fortuitously into his path within the six-yard box.

On the other side, the Berbicians fashioned their best chance in the dying seconds of the first period as Kevin Cottoy was denied within the left side of the box by the keeper following a swift counterattack.

While the momentum of the matchup dropped in the second stanza, Eon Alleyne almost added his name to the scorer’s sheet in the 75th minute as his stinging right-footed effort from 26 yards out in the centre of the field, was parried to safety.

Marlon Headley then had a great chance to level the score two minutes later, receiving a perfectly placed cross within the centre of the area, only to direct his unchallenged header over the crossbar.

The woodwork then came to the rescue of the Berbicians in the dying seconds of the matchup as a curling Junior right-footed free kick from just outside the left of the box, crashed into the right upright.

In the feature contest, Buxton United defeated the Guyana Defence Force 2-1. Action in the championship will continue on Saturday at the No.#5 ground in Berbice with another doubleheader.
