GDF now fourth in Stag Beer Elite League

The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) moved into the fourth position in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Stag Beer Elite League, downing Monedderlust FC 2-1 on Tuesday at the Camp Ayanganna ground.

Selwyn Isaacs and Delroy Fraser ensured the hosts walked away with the vital three points compliments of goals in the 20th and 26th minutes respectively. Scoring in the loss was Travis Thom in the 64th minute.

Due to the win, GDF moved into the fourth position with 14 points. On the other hand, Monedderlust remain in the cellar position with seven points.

Losing the first encounter by a 3-2 margin, the army unit almost got off to the worst possible start as Kimba Brathwaite wasted a glorious chance in the 10th minute to give the visitors the lead, firing his effort straight at the goalkeeper after collecting a left sided pass within the centre of the box.

The Berbicians would pay for their earlier miss as Isaacs gave the home side the lead 10 minutes onward, rifling his powerful right footed strike into the left hand corner, after pouncing on a botched clearance on top of the box following a right sided cornerkick.

It quickly became 2-0 six minutes later as Fraser scored, turning his marker outside the left of the box, before blasting his effort into the roof of the net while cutting into the area.

The score line could have easily been 3-0 in the 28th minute as Delwyn Fraser, upon playing a one-two pass combination outside the centre of the box with sibling Delroy, curled his right footed effort just over the crossbar.

Another great chance would go abegging for the hosts in the 40th minute as Delwyn Fraser, upon cutting into the left side of the box, fired his right footed attempt into the side netting.

The home side’s failure to put the game beyond their foe would come back haunt them as Thom scored, heading the ball into the net from within the centre of the box after a Lester Cummings lobbed shot from the right sided was parried into his onrushing path by the ‘keeper.

Delroy Fraser then wasted a good opportunity to restore his team’s lead in the 82nd minute, fighting off the challenge of his marker while racing into the centre of the box, only to fire his effort wide of the lower left hand corner with only the keeper in his path.

The woodwork then came to the rescue of the Berbicians in the 89th minute as Delroy Fraser upon racing onto a through pass, fired his right footed effort onto the right upright within the right side of the penalty area.

In the opening fixture of the evening, league leader Pele FC dismantled Bourda based unit the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) by a 6-0 margin.
