Short-handed Slingerz defeats GDF 4-2

A 10 member Slingerz FC defeated the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) by a 4-2 score line to climb to second position when the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Stag Beer Elite League continued on Friday at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground.

Julian Wade led the way with a double on either side of half time in the 23rd and 61st minutes while Vurlon Mills and Dwain Jacobs assisted with solo goals in the 22nd and 88th minutes respectively.

On target in the loss, Eusi Phillips and Delroy Fraser scored in the ninth and 83rd minutes correspondingly. Due to the win, the Vergenoegen unit climb to 21 points to occupy the second position.

Coming off a crushing 6-0 win of GFC, the West Demerara unit started the matchup badly as the army unit was awarded a dubious penalty nine minutes into the action for a supposed handball infraction within the centre of the box on Joshua Browne.

Tasked with taking the spot-kick, Phillips made no mistake from the mark as buried his effort into the lower left hand corner, sending the goal-keeper the wrong way in the process.

Nonetheless, the army side’s lead would be short-lived as Mills netted 13 minutes onward, blasting his first time right footed effort into the right hand corner of the net, after collecting right sided cross from Dexroy Adams on top of the box.

The score line quickly became 2-1 in favour of the West Demerara unit as Wade netted one minute later compliments of a goal-keeping error as hopeful right sided cross from Dwain Jacobs which was punched onto the head of Wade by the keeper, which ricocheted into the centre of the goal.

Despite their lead, misery befell Slingerz FC as Colin Nelson was sent off after picking up his second bookable offence in the 28th minute.

Positioned to take a freekick just outside the right of the box, the burly centrehalf took the freekick before the approval of the official, in the process picking up his second yellow in the process.
