Persaud, Webster Digicel Open Classic champs

Avinash “Ganguly” Persaud retained his title while Shanella Webster won her first title as the Digicel Guyana Open Golf Classic concluded its two-day tournament yesterday at the Lusignan Golf Course.

Persaud, who finished with a gross 154 and a net 150, dominated the final day as he swept past 67 other golfers including sibling Avinda Kishore who finished in second place with a gross 160 and a net 154.

President of the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC), Alfred Mentore finished in third place with 161 gross and a 147 net.

Webster, who won her first Open title, snatched the crown from defending champion Joan Deo who placed second with a net 150.

Christine Sukhram, who was tied with Deo on a 73 net at the end of the first day, finished third with a net 151.

Saturday’s first day’s play was dominated by Mohanlall Dinnanauth and Rishi Sukhram who shared a gross of 76.

They were unable to capitalize on their first day’s good showing as Persaud dominated the entire course yesterday.

During the presentation, President of the Lusignan Golf Club, Oncar Ramroop expressed his satisfaction with the turnout as well as the support the tournament has been receiving from Digicel over the years.

Digicel’s Kevin Kelly said that he was happy to see the tournament being run with such a high level of competitiveness and professionalism by the golfers and thanked them for their support. Minister of Communities Ronald Bulkan, during his special speech, said that he was happy to see the tremendous turnout as well as the results, lauding the efforts of his fellow golfers. (Clifton Ross)
