Adams nets double in New Amsterdam United defeat of Milerock

New Amsterdam United commenced the Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Company GTT Knockout football championships on a winning note Saturday, defeating Milerock 2-1 at the No. #5 ground, Berbice.

Adrian Adams registered a double in the 26th and 85th minutes for the Berbicians while Jermaine Grandison netted in the 70th minute for the losers. With the win, New Amsterdam are on three points while Milerock remain scoreless.

In a match highlighted by several chances, Adams gave his side the early lead in the 19th minute, curling his right-footed effort from outside the left of the penalty box into the right hand corner of the net.

Grandison almost levelled the score for the visitors in the 39th minute, rifling his effort from outside of the left of the penalty box, narrowly wide of the lower left hand corner of the net.

The equaliser continued to evade the Linden unit as Matthew White directed his powerful header straight at the final defender in the 59th minute, after collecting a left sided corner kick within the box.

Grandison eventually levelled the score 11 minutes later, netting into the lower right hand corner via a penalty kick following a hand-ball infringement within the box.

Milerock almost snatched the lead four minutes later but Ron Fiedtkou placed his header into the path of the ‘keeper after rising high to meet a left-side cross inside the centre of the area.

Nonetheless, the home side snatched the go-ahead goal five minutes before the fixture’s conclusion as Adams scored from the penalty mark into the lower right hand corner, after being bundled down inside the box from behind by his marker.

Milerock almost grabbed the equaliser in dramatic fashion three minutes onward but Rene Allicock volleyed his left footed shot from within the box wide of the right hand corner, after pouncing on a loose ball. In the feature contest, Winners Connection dismantled Rosignol United by a 6-1 score line.

Winner of the event will pocket $500,000 and the championship trophy while the second place side will pocket $250,000 and the respective accolade. The third place side will receive $125,000 and a trophy while the fourth positioned unit will collect $75,000 and the respective accolade.

Action in the tourney will continue today at the Victoria ground with another doubleheader.

The opening match will pit Topp XX against Ann’s Grove while the second matchup will witness Golden Grove battling Victoria Kings.
