Pooranmall reclaims A Class crown

—Heywood is B Class champ

National player Khemraj Pooranmall reclaimed the A Class crown while Linden Heywood was the winner of the B Class category when the Guyana Draughts Association staged its annual National Draughts Championships last weekend at the National Gymnasium.

Heywood, of America Street, amassed 21 points to edge out Ulric Braithwaite, Tyrone David and Navin Neighbarran who each ended on 20 points.

David, however decided not to contest the tie break was adjudged fourth while Brathwaite won the tie break from Neighbarran and was adjudged second.

On Sunday, Pooranmall won the six-round Swiss System A Class competition ending with 17 points.

Linden’s Floyd Cumberbatch finished one point behind on 16 points.

Steve Bacchus and Mark Braithwaithe ended on 15 points each but a tie breaker saw Bacchus placing third.

The top players received trophies donated by Colours Boutique, Lalta Gainda of Rubis Bel Air, A. Ahamad Hydraulics Bagotstown, Berbice Bridge Inc., Hand-in-Hand Trust and Brands Security Service.

President of the Guyana Draughts Association Jiaram said he wished to extend gratitude to the sponsors and coordinator Paul D’Anjou for helping to make the tournament a success.

Meanwhile, the International 100 square championships will be contested November 22 over six rounds using the Swiss System format.

Registration begins at 10.30am and game time is 11.00am sharp. All players countrywide are invited to participate.
