Castello Housing Scheme, Shopping Plaza punch ticket to group round

Castello Housing Scheme and Shopping Plaza were among the sides to clinch their berth to the group stage when the qualifying round of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Georgetown tourney concluded on Monday.

Hosted at the California Square Tarmac in East Ruimveldt, Castello Housing Scheme overcame Kingston 2-1.

Nigel Denny gave Kitty the initial lead in the ninth minute, placing his effort down the centre of the goal from just the penalty arc, after collecting a left side pass.

Castello Housing Scheme levelled the score in the 16th minute through a Lawrence Fanfair strike from the left side of the field into the centre of the goal. The win was then completed in the final seconds of the 20th minute engagement as Rawle Jones scored, finishing his effort from the right side through the legs of the goalkeeper and into the centre of the goal, following a one-on-one situation.

Similarly, Shopping Plaza downed Postal A-Scheme 1-0 with Stephen Dolphin recording the fastest goal in Guinness of the Streets history with a nine second conversion.

Starting at the halfway mark, Dolphin, upon cutting across the field to the right side, unleashed a powerful right footed strike which sneaked into the right hand corner. In other results, Stevedore Housing Scheme crushed the Prison Service 3-1. Rayon Blackman netted brace in the second and eighth minutes while Travis Fortune scored in the 16th minute. On target in the loss was Roger Pilgrim in the seventh minute.

Meanwhile, Upsetters edged North Sophia 1-0 compliments of a Joshua Britton seventh minute effort while Old School Ballers downed Princess Street by an identical score line through a Tevin Curry fourth minute conversion.

Continuing with the results, Gold Star punched their ticket to the group round, squeaking past Piccadilly 1-0. Leon Thomas netted the only goal in the 11th minute.

Similarly, Young Ballers defeated Lamaha Park 2-1 on penalty kicks after normal time ended scoreless while Kitty Warriors went down to Channel-9 Warriors by an identical margin after regulation time finished 0-0.

The final result of the evening witnessed Jamoon Drive defeating Lodge Stars after the latter was disqualified by the tourney’s management staff for fielding an ineligible player. The player in question featured for two teams in the event, which led to Lodge Stars being disqualified.

Winner of the event will pocket $500,000, the championship trophy and the right to represent the zone at the national tourney while the second, third and fourth placed units will collect $200,000. $150,000 and $100,000 respectively and the corresponding accolade.

Action in the group stage is slated to continue tomorrow at the Burnham Court Basketball Tarmac.
