Elite League final round gets underway today

With positions and key placements for the playoff round still up for grabs, the final round in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Stag Beer Elite League commences today at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground in Bourda.

While the feature contest at 20:30hrs of the night will pit cellar occupant GFC against seventh placed Monedderlust, the opening affair at 18:00hrs will be a key positional matchup when fourth-placed unit Fruta Conquerors lock horns with sixth-placed Buxton United. Coming off a 3-3 battle with Slingerz FC in their previous fixture, the Tucville-based unit will be desperate to seal the win as they aim to clinch their position in the semi-final playoff round, with the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) sitting two points behind in the fifth position slated to play on Sunday.

The Tucville unit will also have positive memories of their previous meeting after winning by a 1-0 margin. Similarly, Buxton United is the only team yet to secure a draw in the event, which is another positive for the Georgetown unit.

In attack, Fruta Conquerors are the fifth best side in the championship, netting 18 goals thus far over 13 games. Kwame LaFleur leads their scoring chart with four goals while Eon Alleyne, Jermin Junior and Dennis Edwards have scored three, two and two goals respectively.

Defensively they sit in the fourth position, conceding an unwanted 17 goals to date. On the other hand, Buxton United will be willing spoilers to the Georgetown unit’s ambition and will be in a buoyant mood despite losing 4-3 to league leader Alpha United in their prior matchup. From an attacking standpoint, Buxton have struggled throughout the tourney as they are at the bottom of the chart with only 10 conversions. Defensively, they are second from the cellar position after conceding 23 goals over their campaign.

Action in the event will continue on Sunday with another doubleheader.

Winner of the round will pocket $4,000,000 while the second, third and fourth place teams will collect $2,000,000, $1,000,000 and $500,000 respectively.

Similarly, the point’s leader prior to the knockout stage in the League Genesis round will pocket an additional $1,000,000.
