Lady Jags to face off with Jamaica today

The Lady Jaguars will oppose Caribbean Football Union (CFU) rival Jamaica today at the Ato Bolton Stadium in Couva, Trinidad in a must-win third place playoff in the final round CFU Women’s Olympic Qualifier.

The Lady Jaguars missed out on the opportunity to qualify automatically for the CONCACAF playoffs after going down to the 115th ranked Puerto Ricans by a 1-0 score line in the opening semi-final showdown.

Karina Socarras separated the two sides with a 118th minute attempt in a match which was the first meeting between the two nations.

Similarly today’s match against Jamaica will be the first competitive match between the two countries. Presently Guyana sit 142nd on the ranking chart of the world governing body while Jamaica on the other hand, are positioned significantly higher at 74th.

If the Lady Jaguars emerge victorious, they will join Puerto Rico and Trinidad as the region’s representatives in the CONCACAF playoffs which will feature the likes of the USA, Mexico and Canada to see who will represent the confederation at the Olympic Games next year in Brazil.

Guyana had clinched their berth to the semi-final round in the CFU tourney after emerging as the top side in Group Four which comprised of Cuba and St Kitts and Nevis.
