Alpha, Slingerz in key clash

High profile clashes will bring down the league stage in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Stag Beer Elite League when league leader Alpha United opposes Slingerz and Pele FC tackle the Guyana Defence Force today at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground.

The feature contest at 20:30hrs will be a top of the table battle between fierce rivals Alpha United and Slingerz FC, with only one point separating the two teams. The previous meeting between the two teams played out in the form of a scoreless draw at the Leonora Sports Facility.

In terms of the attack, Alpha United are the fourth best offence in the event with 21 conversions. Though their will miss the presence of captain Daniel Wilson due to his participation in a MLS tryouts,  Delon Lanferman will lead the offence responsibility as he currently sits on an event leading 10 strikes.

Defensively, the ‘Hammers’ possess the second best record as they have only conceded 11 goals compliments of a formidable partnership of Quincy Madramootoo and Wayne Elias alongside the bruising midfield combination of Anthony Bellfield and Philbert Moffat. .

On the other side, Slingerz FC are arguably the most balanced team in the tourney as they possess formidable numbers on both end of the field.

From an attacking standpoint, the Vergenoegen side as the best offence in the event with 28 goals thus far. Unlike most teams that have a principal scored, Slingerz FC have shared the offensive burden with several players netted at least twice.

Dexroy Adams and Julian Wade have found the net five times while Vurlon Mills, Anthony Abrams, Tichard Joseph and Dwain Jacobs have scored three, three, two and two goals respectively. Similarly, Slingerz possess the best defensive record as they have only conceded nine goals to date.

While they will miss the services of Solomon Austin due to a red card suspension, Joshua Browne, Tichard Joseph, Les Charles Critchlow and Anthony Harding are a formidable contingent and will be expected maintain their high standards come kick off time.

In the opening affair, third place Pele FC will attempt to get back to winning ways when they oppose fifth placed Guyana Defence Force (GDF).

The army unit will have good memories of their first meeting as they prevailed 2-1 and will attempt to secure a similar result come kick off time.

On the attacking front, GDF has the fourth best record with 22 strikes. Delroy Fraser is been the main threat for the army as he has netted seven goals conversions while the equally dangerous Eusi Phillips and Delwyn Fraser have netted four and three goals each.

On the defensive side, GDF has shipped 22 goals which is the third worst record in the competition. If they are to emerge with the vital three points, a better showing will be needed led by the veteran duo of Selwyn Isaacs and Seon Prince.

However Pele will be determined to finish the league stage in the best possible manner and will be desperate of a confident building win as they head into the event’s knockout section. From an attacking perspective, Pele enjoy the second best record with 26 goals over their campaign.

Seasoned marksman Gregory Richardson with 10 conversions has been enjoying a great tourney and will lead a side featuring formidable front-line in Ronel Gordon, Travis Grant, Omallo Williams, Darren Harris and Deon Alfred.

Defensively, Pele has conceded 14 goals, which is the third best recorded in the event led by the impressive centrehalf Jumane Somerset and custodian Devon Charles. Following the conclusion of the league stage, the top four teams will advance to the knockout round.

Winner of the round will pocket $4,000,000 while the second, third and fourth place teams will collect $2,000,000, $1,000,000 and $500,000 respectively.

Similarly, the point’s leader prior to the knockout stage in the League Genesis round will pocket an additional $1,000,000.
