Chase’s hundred, Nurse’s five put Pride on top

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Roston Chase continued to impress with his second first class hundred while seasoned off-spinner Ashley Nurse claimed a five-wicket haul to quell a Leeward Islands Hurricanes fightback on the second day of their fifth round match in the Regional First Class Championship yesterday. The right-handed Chase finished on a career-best unbeaten 136 as Pride, resuming on 272 for six, were bowled out for 368, half-hour before lunch at Kensington Oval. Hurricanes then cruised to 73 for two before Nurse triggered a collapse to send the visitors crashing to 170 all out. Peters stroked a top score of 44 and English County pro Chesney Hughes got 32 but Nurse’s five for 65 made all the difference as Hurricanes lost eight wickets for 97 runs to be dismissed near the close. Nurse got great support from pacer Miguel Cummins who grabbed four for 18. Pride, with a handy lead of 153 runs, will begin their second innings on the third day today. Resuming on 95, Chase raised three figures and then held the Pride innings together with a knock that came in just under 5-1/2 hours, off 247 balls and included 20 fours.

He shared two healthy partnerships, posting 38 for the eighth wicket with Sulieman Benn who scored 19 from 18 balls with four fours and another 42 for the ninth with Tino Best whose 24 came off 22 balls and included three sixes.

Hurricanes then got a solid start when Hughes put on 32 for the first wicket with Shane Jeffers (18) and a further 41 for the second wicket with Peters.

After Jeffers was caught at point off Cummins, Peters counted eight fours and a six off 114 balls in 126 minutes while Hughes faced 93 deliveries in a shade under two hours and struck four fours, as they rebuilt the innings.

Once the left-handed Hughes was caught at the wicket off Nurse, however, the innings declined steadily as Nurse and Cummins ran through the middle and lower order.
