Wells brace eases Huddersfield’s relegation fears

LONDON, CMC – Bermudian striker Nahki Wells scored twice as Huddersfield Town eased their relegation worries with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Preston North End at the John Smith’s Stadium in an English Championship match on Boxing Day.

The brace took 25-year-old Wells’ tally for the season to seven.

He gave Huddersfield a 1-0 half-time lead, tapping in in the 38th minute after fastening onto a cross from Emyr Huws.

Wells had the ball in the back of the net two minutes after the break when he finished off the rebound from Harry Bunn’s saved effort but the goal was ruled offside.

Watched by a crowd of 12,315, Wells doubled his tally from an acute angle in the 55th minute when he latched onto Bunn’s pass, before Huws scored the home side’s third goal directly from a wind-assisted corner in the 76th minute.

The visitors. who dropped to 17th place in the table, scored a consolation goal deep into injury time when Adam Reach rounded goalkeeper Jed Steer to slot home.

Despite the victory Huddersfield remain in 19th place but are three points above Bristol City, who dropped into the relegation zone after a 1-1 home draw against Charlton Athletic.
