Flying Ace 40-mile event set for Sunday

The Flying Ace Cycle Club (FACC) of New Amsterdam Berbice will stage a 40-mile cycle road race Sunday in Berbice.

The event is open to all cyclists in the country and will commence at 10am in front of Lewisons’ Auto Parts, Cycle and General Store, Rose Hall Town, Corentyne.

The cyclists will proceed to the Number 51 Police Station and return to the starting point for the finish.

A number of prizes donated by business entities and personalities in Berbice will be at stake.

Prizes will be given to the first six finishers, first three juniors and the first three club cyclists. There will also be 10 prime point prizes up for grabs.

Mark and Neil Lewis of Lewisons’ Auto Parts, Cycle and General Store of Rose Hall Town, Peter Lewis of Peter Lewis Construction, overseas- based Guyanese Kenrick Taylor of Canada and Sherwin Photo works are some of the sponsors.

Yesterday main sponsor Neal Lewis presented a cheque of an undisclosed sum to organiser Randolph Roberts at the store situated at Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, Berbice.

According to the release, officials of the government are expected to be on hand to start the race and help with the distribution of prizes.

Cyclists must participate in their club colours.

Interested participants are asked to get in contact with coordinator Roberts on 333-3821.

Meanwhile, upcoming cyclist, 14-year-old Zamar Khan, a new member of the club was the recipient of a racing cycle from businessman Steve Edwards. Khan, who showed keen interest in the sport, was without a proper bike.

After Coach Roberts saw the interest of the young rider, he contacted Edwards who willingly purchased the bike for the youngster.

According to the release, Edwards said that he was impressed with the work ethic of Roberts and the number of youngsters he has brought to the sport sometimes under trying circumstances.
