Attorney Hukumchand dies

Well-known criminal defence lawyer Hukumchand has passed away after a brief period of hospitalisation.

According to his daughter, attorney Sonia Parag, Hukumchand was born on October 18, 1946, in Number 72 Village, Corentyne, Berbice.

He had been a practising attorney for almost 14 years after being admitted to the bar in 2000.

Parag said that prior to pursuing a career in law, he was a trained teacher attached to the Line Path Secondary School in Corentyne, a probation officer stationed in Region 2 and a lecturer attached to the University of Guyana’s law faculty.

Additionally, Hukumchand also served as Member of Parliament for the then People’s National Congress (PNC) for the period 1992 to 1994.

Parag explained that her father was a practising lawyer up until 2014, when he suffered a stroke. However, he continued to serve as member of the Guyana Bar Association.

Hukumchand is survived by his wife of 36 years and nine children, two of whom are also practising attorneys in Guyana.

Parag noted that her father is expected to be laid to rest following a ceremony on Saturday at the Redeemer Lutheran Church at Pike and Sheriff
