Curcuma longa, commonly called Turmeric originated from South East Asia and India.
Turmeric is an ancient spice and is a main ingredient in curry powder and Asian foods. Marco Polo made mention of this spice on his travels to India when he returned to Europe in the 13th Century.
Turmeric is grown from rhizomes and is part of the ginger family. It can grow to approximately three feet in height. The leaves are dark and glossy green with prominent midrib. Plant Turmeric in large pots or beds in rich loamy soil. This plant likes to be moist so make sure it gets adequate water.
Turmeric is a strongly flavoured spice with a rich golden yellow colour. The leaves are used to wrapped special dishes which impart a distinctive flavour when cooked.
Due to its natural colouring it is used to dye clothing and thread.
In Indian culture, the importance of Turmeric goes beyond food and medicine. It is auspicious and sacred. It is used in religious and wedding ceremony.
Turmeric is also used in Ayurvedic practices.
In recent years Guyana has been promoting the planting of Turmeric.
