Accused shoplifter blames mix-up for charge

Jewan Persaud, who is accused of shoplifting from a city supermarket, was on Wednesday placed on $25,000 bail after he blamed a mix up for the charge.

It was alleged that on January 5, at Bounty Supermarket, Water Street, Georgetown, Persaud stole two body lotions and shampoo from the supermarket.

Persaud, who pleaded “guilty with explanation” when he appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore in a city court, insisted that he did not steal the items but bought them on the pavement. He added that after he purchased the items, he went into Bounty to purchase chowmein. However, he said when his bag was subsequently searched the items were uncovered and he was falsely accused of stealing them.

Based upon the explanation given by the accused and his inability to relay to Magistrate Moore if he understood what guilty and guilty with explanation meant, his plea was changed to not guilty.

Persaud’s trial is now set for January 28.

Also charged with simple larceny on Wednesday was Akeem Stanley, who pleaded not guilty to the charge that on December 25, 2015, at Commerce Street, Georgetown, he stole $10,000 belonging to Rafael Nunes. Stanley was placed on $10,000 bail and the matter, which will go to trial, is set for another hearing on February 12.
