Suspect in Crabwood Creek murder surrenders

The suspect in the New Year’s Day murder at Crabwood Creek turned himself in yesterday to the police.

Asif Hafeez, 24, of Lot 72 Grant 1780, Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, was stabbed to his neck just after midnight on January 1, by a man he was in an argument with. Hafeez was at a neighbour’s home where an argument between him and another man ensued. After the argument escalated and Hafeez threw a punch at the man, he reacted by stabbing him to his neck. Hafeez was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum confirmed yesterday that the suspect, who had fled after stabbing Hafeez to his neck, had turned himself in to the police at the Springlands Police Station. Stabroek News was told that upon surrendering the man gave the police a statement which detailed the sequence of events that led to Hafeez being stabbed to his neck.

The man said that he and Hafeez were drinking when an argument erupted and started to escalate. He said that after he noticed it was getting heated he rushed upstairs to a bedroom and armed himself with a knife and returned downstairs. After the argument continued when he returned downstairs, he stabbed Hafeez to his neck.

A police source told Stabroek News that the man said that he was hiding at a sea dam and was tired of it and that is why he decided to turn himself in.

The man is expected to be charged shortly.
