Fisherman fined for operating with expired licence

A Lamaha Springs man was yesterday ordered to pay a $100,000 fine after he admitted to operating a fishing boat with an expired fishing licence.

A city court heard that police officers, while on duty in the Demerara River, intercepted Billy Glasgow, who was operating the fishing vessel, named “Imperfectly Perfect,” on December 17, 2015. Glasgow was asked to produce his licence, which he did. However, the officers observed that the licence had expired since February 28, 2008. He was then told of the offence he had committed and charged.

Glasgow pleaded guilty to the charge.

Magistrate Annette Singh later asked Glasgow his reasons for operating with an invalid licence and he explained that he had been out of work for some time. The man was then ordered to pay a $100,000 fine within one week or spend an alternative of six months in prison.
