Man accused of causing death of elderly Linden woman charged

The man accused of driving dangerously and causing the death of 75-year-old Henrietta Cadogan appeared at the Linden Magistrate’s Court yesterday charged with the offence and was granted bail.

It is alleged that on January 18 at One Mile, Wismar, Linden Public Road, Wendell Smith, 35, drove motor car HC 5603 in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of Cadogan. He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of $800,000 on the condition that he lodge his passport with the police until the completion of the trial.

Cadogan, of Lot 572 Canvas City, Wismar, Linden, was struck down at around 9:30am on Monday while using a pedestrian crossing along the One Mile, Wismar, Linden Public Road. She died while receiving medical attention at the Mackenzie Hospital.

At the time of the accident, Cadogan was heading to a nearby shop to purchase cassava.

Her daughter, Yvette Cadogan had told Stabroek News that her mother sustained a series of internal injuries since she was bleeding through her ears and the back of her head was bashed in.

The matter was adjourned to February 10 when Smith is expected to make his next court appearance.
