A Cummings Lodge shopkeeper was remanded to prison yesterday after being charged with selling drugs to an undercover policeman.
The court heard that Mohini Singh, 54, of Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, on January 22, at her residence, allegedly sold three grammes of cannabis and one gramme of cocaine to a police detective.
Singh pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to her by Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.
According to Police Prosecutor David Goodridge, the police, acting on information, went to Singh and purchased the narcotics with marked notes. The rank later left and then returned with a team who searched and found the marked notes in the shop. Singh was then cautioned and arrested.
However, according to Singh’s lawyer, Gwendolyn Bristol, her client denied the charges because she never sold the drugs to the policeman, whom she claimed she knows well. The lawyer added that her client has also denied giving the police any statements on the matter.
After hearing the submissions, the magistrate remanded Singh to prison. Her next court date is February 25.
