A collision of two cars at the corner of Mandela Avenue and Hadfield Streets left one driver with a broken neck early yesterday morning.
Mark Hackett, 49, who had been in the company of his daughter at the time of the accident, is now a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
According to family members, while his daughter suffered minor injuries, Hackett, who was unconscious when he was taken to the hospital, reportedly suffered a fractured neck. He was said to have been experiencing chest pains up until late yesterday afternoon.
The accident resulted in the two cars being submerged side-by-side in a nearby trench.
An eyewitness said that around 8.15am, a red Toyota Carina, driven by Hackett, had been proceeding east along Hadfield and a silver Allion, heading south along Mandela, when the latter collided with the former, causing the two to be catapulted into the trench.
The witness said he could feel the vibration through his car. At the time, he had been in his vehicle heading west along Hadfield, crossing at the same time as Hackett was proceeding. He stated that he barely escaped being part of the collision as the rear of his vehicle could have easily been hit.
The man reported also that there was a third driver in a white Toyota 212 who may have had some influence on the collision, as he had blocked off a section of the roadway. He added that if that driver had been considerate of the traffic situation, the accident might have never occurred. That driver left the scene soon after.
The driver of the Allion remained at the scene but declined to offer any comments.
