Although a post-mortem examination performed on Kurt Burke revealed that the injuries which caused his death were injuries sustained in a vehicular accident, his distressed relatives continue to insist that foul play was involved.
Burke’s cousin Candacy (only name given) confirmed the findings of the post-mortem examination and ‘C’ Division Commander Marlon Chapman also informed Stabroek News that the cause of Burke’s death was by accident. He said investigations are ongoing.
The police had said that 41-year-old Burke, a farmer of Drill, Mahaicony, was found around 9.30 am on Wednesday on the main road at Drill, with injuries suspected to have been caused in a hit-and-run accident.
Burke was last seen alive on Tuesday afternoon. His cousin said he had visited an aunt’s house and assisted with some chores. It was explained that the father of five then went to his house, where he picked up some fish to take back to his aunt’s home but never made it back.
His relatives have maintained that he was murdered owing to the extent of his injuries, including a severed foot.
When contacted yesterday, Candacy said she was told that Burke died after a vehicle ran over his body but this is not accepted by his family since she said they are sensing something “fishy” in the matter. She said there was not sufficient evidence to indicate that he indeed died in an accident.
She also accused the police of not carrying out proper investigations. “Since they come the day [Wednesday] and the body was taken to the parlour, they ain’t even come back. The foot nothing ain’t find up to now,” Candacy stated.
