Kitty man denied bail on gun, ammo charges

A Kitty man, allegedly caught with an illegal gun at his home, was yesterday faced with charges in a city court, which heard that the weapon belonged to his cousin.

Junior Richard Stewart, 30, appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore, who read charges that on February 16, at Kitty, Georgetown, he had in his possession a .32 pistol as well as four rounds of matching ammunition while not being the holder of a gun licence.

Stewart, of 144 Thomas Street, Kitty, pleaded not guilty to both charges.

According to the facts presented by the prosecution, police, acting on information, went to Stewart’s home and conducted a search that uncovered a .32 pistol in a black bag at the top of the man’s bunk.

Attorney Gordon Gilhuys, who represented the accused, acknowledged the fine but stated that on the night before, his client had a wake at his home and a cousin slept in the room, where the alleged gun was found.

After hearing the submissions, Magistrate Azore remanded the accused to prison until February 29, when his next hearing is scheduled.
