Weeder charged with threatening to kill wife

A Chateau Margot weeder was yesterday charged with assault and threatening behaviour after he allegedly battered his wife and then threatened to kill her while wielding a cutlass.

Pooran Ajodha, 42, of M8 Chateau Margot Sideline Dam, allegedly assaulted and used threating behaviour to Somila Ajodha, on February 20, at their home. Ajodha pleaded not guilty to both charges, which were read to him by Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Better Hope Community Centre, where the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court is temporarily being housed.

Police Prosecutor Shevon Jupiter told the court that the husband and wife are known to the police for reports of spousal abuse but Somila Ajodha in all cases has refused to pursue the matter.

He said on the day of the attack, Pooran Ajodha dealt his wife several blows about her body and then picked up a chopper and threatened to kill her.

However, the man’s lawyer, Gwendolyn Bristol, said he never assaulted or threatened his wife and that she no longer wished to proceed with the matter.

However, the magistrate placed Pooran Ajodha on a bond to keep the peace, pending the outcome of the matter and granted bail of $30,000 on the assault charge and $10,000 on the threatening behavior charge.

His next court date is on March 14, when the court will receive a probation report.
