Mon Repos brothers charged with wounding

Two Mon Repos brothers, accused of wounding a man with a cutlass during a dispute, were yesterday placed on $80,000 bail each after denying the charge.

It is alleged that on February 13, at Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, Suresh and Darshana Mohabir of Lot 93 Second Street, Mon Repos north, East Coast Demerara, unlawfully and maliciously wounded Surujnauth Persaud.

Darshana, 20, and Suresh, 22, both pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read to them by Sparendaam Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Better Hope Community Centre, where the court is temporarily being held. Police Prosecutor David Goodridge said that on the day in question, Persaud was walking in the street, when Darshana and Suresh who were among others standing in the same street approached the virtual complainant and started to beat him.

One of the brothers who was armed with a cutlass dealt Persaud a chop to his left finger, the prosecutor added.

Suresh and Darshana Mohabir were subsequently granted bail and were ordered to make a second appearance in court on April 26.

The two were also placed on a bond to keep the peace.
