GWI mobilising for further drought relief in Region Nine

The Guyana Water Inc (GWI) is continuing to work with the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of Region 9 to provide assistance to communities there suffering from the current dry weather conditions.

According to Hinterland Engineer, Cleon French, GWI is providing technical assistance including the supply of materials to ensure that water is accessed within the Region.

A release from the utility said that GWI and the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) have also provided water tanks and electrical pumps along with other materials.

GWI representatives are also mobilising to undertake remedial works in the villages of Annai, Maruranuau, Katoonarib and Aishalton.

“We are conducting a number of well cleaning exercises in collaboration with the communities to ensure that there is access to water”, stated French, “we are also lowering the well pumps in order to accommodate the decrease in the levels within the wells due to the dry weather conditions. This exercise will assist in achieving continuous service’”.

In addition, GWI has sought the assistance of an expert to conduct a technical assessment within the Region to provide a comprehensive report with recommendations for short, medium and long term solutions.

The release said that the GWI team will continue to collaborate with the Regional Democratic Council, Civil Defence Commission and all other stakeholders to ensure that the communities will have access to potable water.
