Ice cream man accused of having ganja for trafficking

An ice cream vendor was yesterday remanded to prison after a court heard that he was found with over one kilo of cannabis.

It is alleged that on March 17, at 70 Kilometers Cuyuni Outpost, near the Cuyuni River, Korwin Holder, 23, of 1096 Sophia, Georgetown, had in his possession 1,280 grammes of cannabis for trafficking.

Holder pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in Georgetown.

Attorney Paul Fung-A-Fat, who represented Holder, claimed the cannabis was found in a land cruiser where there were several passengers but only Holder was charged with the offence.

Fung-A-Fat further begged for bail for his client, citing the recent prison riots as the special reason for his release.

Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones objected to bail on the basis that the defence provided the court with no special reasons which would favour bail for Holder.

Holder was subsequently remanded to prison by the Chief Magistrate. His matter was adjourned to April 6, when it will be called at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
