Convict found guilty of carjacking taxi driver

A convicted carjacker was found guilty and sentenced to 18 months in jail yesterday for another armed carjacking he committed last year.

Mike Tyson, 25, of Lot 567 Conciliation Drive, Tucville, Georgetown was found guilty yesterday of robbing Lawrence Singh of his Toyota Spacio, valued at $2M, a cell phone and $10,000 cash, while he was armed with a gun.

The attack had taken place last August at McDoom, East Bank Demerara.

Tyson, who is already serving a 58-month-long sentence, was sentenced by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in a Georgetown court.

During her ruling, the Magistrate noted that during Singh’s testimony he had told the court that on the day in question he had picked up Tyson from La Grange, West Bank Demerara and dropped him off at McDoom. Singh had recalled the ordeal of Tyson pointing a gun at him and demanding that he drive the vehicle.

The taxi driver recounted that he alerted the police before boarding a taxi to chase after the carjacker. Police chased after Tyson, who eventually crashed the stolen vehicle at David Street, Kitty, Georgetown.

According to the Magistrate, she had taken into consideration the mounting evidence that was produced by the prosecution against Tyson to determine the verdict.

On February 29, Magistrate Judy Latchman had jailed Tyson for 58 months after he was found guilty of robbing another taxi driver.

Tyson had robbed Anish Veersammy last July of a Toyota Premio, valued at $3.8M, two speakers, valued at $200,000 and $10,000 cash, among other items.

Tyson was also charged with robbing Eson Grimes of a car and other items in July last year. This matter is still ongoing in the court.
