Guard claims self defence after wounding elderly farmer in Madewini shooting

A security guard is currently in police custody after he wounded an elderly farmer who allegedly attacked him with a knife while he was on duty Friday evening.

The incident occurred around 8 pm at the Madewini Sand Pit road.

Stabroek News was told that Junior Dowding, 27, was on patrol duty at a chicken farm at Madewini Sand Pit road when he was allegedly attacked by 65-year-old farmer Albert Samuel.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are unclear but reports indicated that the men had a previous dispute.

Samuel reportedly threw a knife in Dowding’s direction, causing him to sustain a wound to his chest. As a result, Dowding, discharged several rounds into the ground and the pellets ricocheted, hitting Samuels to the left arm and leg.

Samuels was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he remained a patient in a stable condition up to yesterday.

Dowding was taken to the Diamond Hospital, where he was treated and then arrested. He remains in police custody and his firearm has been lodged.
