Sugar worker dies after bee attack at Blairmont estate

The Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) today said that one of its employees, Romesh Lalaram died yesterday after being attacked by bees in the Old Bath Field.

Around 12:45 hours yesterday, GuySuCo said that some of its employees from Bath Settlement were in the Old Bath Field on the road to the Blairmont estate cultivation when they were attacked by a swarm of bees.

Several employees, who were present at the time of the incident, were also stung by the bees. GuySuCo said that a prompt response by the Estate management saw the employees being rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital in the Estate’s ambulance, but unfortunately, Lalaram was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

Six of the seven employees were treated and sent home while one remains in hospital under observation.

The Board of Directors, Management and Staff of the Guyana Sugar Corporation expressed condolences to the family of Lalaram. The Corporation says it is liaising closely with the family of the deceased to provide support at this very sad time.
