Baramita woman remanded on attempted murder charge

A Region One woman was yesterday remanded to prison after she was charged with attempting to murder her common-law husband.

It is alleged that 20-year-old Dianna Baird unlawfully and maliciously wounded Dwayne Cambridge on March 26, at Baramita Line with the intent to commit murder.

Baird was not required to plead to the charge.

Attorney-at-law Bernard Da Silva, who appeared on behalf of the defendant, stated that his client has suffered much verbal and physical abuse from Cambridge. He added that on the day in question, the defendant was at a shop with friends when Cambridge approached her armed with a cutlass and dealt her several blows about her body. In an attempt to defend herself, Da Silva added, the accused began to fight resulting in Cambridge sustaining several injuries.

The prosecution, objecting to bail based on the nature and gravity of the charge and the penalty it attracts, gave facts that did not support what Da Silva said in his address.

According to the prosecution, on the day in question, the accused was at a shop drinking when Cambridge went to her and asked her to accompany him home and she refused. It was while Cambridge was taking her out of the bar, the prosecution said, that the defendant broke a bottle and dealt him several stabs to his left side, piercing his lung. Cambridge was later airlifted to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he is currently a patient in a critical condition.

Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan remanded the defendant and adjourned the matter to May 3 at the Matthews Ridge Magistrate’s Court.
