Man jailed for 33 months over Pike Street fatal accident

Delon Duncan, who was charged on December 4, 2015 with causing the death of Travis Bollers by dangerous driving was yesterday sentenced to 2 years 9 months imprisonment.

The defendant, of  Lot 982 Block ‘F’ Sophia, was found guilty of causing the death of 17-year-old Bollers, on November 26, 2015 at Pike and Sheriff streets.

Duncan’s sentence was handed down by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan; his trial had come to an end several days ago.

The Chief Magistrate said her ruling was based on the evidence of the prosecution that the defendant was the driver of the pick-up and drove it in a reckless manner without due care for road users. She added that the driving of the defendant on the day of the incident was way below that of a careful driver, stating that it was because of the manner in which he drove the vehicle that Bollers was hit.

Additionally, the court heard that the defendant in his oral statement to the court did not put himself at the scene of the accident.

Before the magistrate handed down sentence, the defendant apologised to the family of the deceased and asked for their forgiveness and for the mercy of the court.

Chief Magistrate McLennan then sentenced the defendant to 2 years 9 months imprisonment noting that the time he had already spent on remand was taken into consideration.

On the day of the incident Bollers and his cousin Quacy McCalman were riding a motorcycle along Pike Street, Campbellville, headed towards Sheriff Street when a Toyota Tacoma driven by Duncan turned into the street and collided with them.

Bollers, who was riding the bike, and McCalman, who was the pillion rider, were subsequently rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where the teen was pronounced dead on arrival.
