The wooden stands at D’urban Park are starting to show signs of deterioration though only months old.

Several persons have raised their concerns on social media about the current state of the stands, which were erected late last year and are being completed in time for next month’s Golden Jubilee celebrations.

When Stabroek News inspected the stands yesterday, there were clear signs of inferior work as most of the supporting beams were seen with long, deep cracks running from the top of the beams to the bottom.

As the stands were ascended, the boards shook as if they would easily break under pressure. Nails and screws were seen protruding through the sides of some fixtures when they should have been buried in the middle.

When contacted for a comment yesterday, Junior Education Minister Nicolette Henry said that she was unaware that such claims were being made about the stands. She said that the description of inferior work was only a matter of opinion and that the National Commemoration Commission along with other line agencies had inspected the area yesterday and a report is supposed to come to her today.

She said that until she sees the report or sees the stands with the damage, she would not be able to make a comment.
