Sparendaam mason charged with attempted murder over stolen bike

A Sparendaam mason was on Thursday denied bail after he was charged with attempting to murder a man over the theft of a bike.

It is alleged that on April 3rd, at Plaisance, East Coast of Demerara, Ezekiel Rodney, 23, with intent to commit murder, maliciously wounded Timothy Herod.

Rodney was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which was read to him by Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Better Hope Community Centre.

Police Prosecutor David Goodridge told the court that three other suspects are to be charged since they were with Rodney on the day of the attack.

The attack was alleged to have been due to a stolen bicycle, which Rodney claimed that Herod’s brother stole. As a result, he and three other men went to the complainant’s home and dealt him several chops with a cutlass about his body.

Goodridge objected to bail for Rodney since Herod is still hospitalised in a critical condition and is due to undergo emergency surgery at any time. He told the court that the complainant has a fractured skull and injuries to his eyes.

Despite an application for bail by Rodney’s lawyer, the man was subsequently remanded to prison by the magistrate, who adjourned the matter until April 26th.
