Diamond man charged with 2007 White Water murder

A Great Diamond resident was yesterday charged and remanded to prison for allegedly committing a murder nine years ago.

The court heard that on April 12, 2007, at White Water Landing, Potaro, Essequibo, Alvin Calder, 45, of 1325 Lot Y 17 Street, Great Diamond, East Bank Demerara, murdered Joseph Willy called “Jeff-man”.

Calder was not required to plead to the indicatable charge that was read to him by Magistrate Judy Latchman.

According to Calder’s Attorney Jerome Khan, his client was the one who was attacked by Willy with a cutlass on the day in question.

He said that during the incident, Willy was chasing Calder with the cutlass when he, Calder accidentally fired a shot at him. He claimed that his client did not know that Willy was dead and it was not his intention to kill him.

The matter was adjourned by the Magistrate until May 13 for assignment in Court One. Calder was remanded to prison.
