It is alleged that on May 2 at Eteringbang Landing, Essequibo, Marlyn Leandro, 39, had in her possession 2.6 grammes of cocaine. Leandro pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read to her by Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

According to Leandro’s lawyer Jerome Khan, his client was selling in a shop when the police turned up wanting to search the place.

After the search was conducted by the officers, they found the cocaine, Khan told the court. The lawyer added that Leandro admitted that the drugs were hers because she was told that she would only be required to pay a fine and then she would have been released.

Moreover, the lawyer said, a bail application should be made for her since there were several people in the building at the time and it could have been anyone’s drugs.

Police Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick objected to bail, saying that the cocaine was found on Leandro’s premises and that she did not give the police her address.

After hearing submissions from both sides, Magistrate Latchman remanded Leandro to prison. Her matter was adjourned until May 13, and transferred to Court one.
