Gov’t seeking approval to pay $102m to Caribbean Premier League

In Financial Paper Three lodged in the National Assembly on Wednesday, the government is seeking approval for supplementary provisions for the payment of $102m to the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) for matches hosted here last year.

This move comes amid apparently failed talks between Guyana and CPL to have this year’s semifinals and final played here.

The decision to pay the sum by way of supplementary provisions may prove controversial. When APNU+AFC entered office last year it was met with a bill from CPL which had been incurred under the previous PPP/C administration. There were also statements from the APNU+AFC administration to the effect that there was no documentation to substantiate the expenditure.
