Fleeing robbery suspect dies after shot in back by police

About 0110h. today, ranks of a mobile police patrol along Broad Street, Montrose, ECD, saw a man running behind a motor vehicle with registration PSS 6835 and shouting that he had been robbed of a sum of money by persons in the vehicle.

The police in a statement today said they subsequently intercepted the motor vehicle, inside of which was the driver and another man in whose possession was found $21,000.

The man and the robbery victim who has been identified as Deryck Persaud, 46 years, of Cummings Lodge, ECD, were placed into the police vehicle and the motor vehicle PSS 6835 was escorted to the Sparendaam Police Station.  Persaud informed the police that he had been robbed by the two men who were armed with a handgun and a knife.

Upon arrival on the roadway in front of the Police Station and as the ranks approached the driver of PSS 6835 that was involved in the robbery, he brandished a firearm and drove off the vehicle in an attempt to escape during which the police discharged  a round that struck him to his body, the statement said.

The man was pronounced dead on arrival at the GPHC and has been identified as Ryan Vaux, 36 years, of Norton Street, Lodge.

A pellet handgun was found in the motor car which had crashed in the vicinity of Vryheid’s Lust Access Road, ECD.

The other suspect is in police custody assisting with the investigations.
