After a part of the Coldingen, East Coast Demerara road collapsed last week, residents filled it with sand as a temporary fix and are calling on the authorities to repair it.
While that section of the road had always been in a bad condition, the entire piece collapsed into a culvert which made it impossible for vehicles to pass as it was too deep and wide. “Well there always had a big, big hole in the road for as long as I can remember and them vehicles used to had to take the corner to pass the road but me ain’t know what happen and now the whole thing cave in the other day,” a taxi driver related to Stabroek News, explaining that since the road caved in a number of cars got stuck in it.
“About four of them already fall in and is hard to take them out and them man vehicle going to get nuff damage cause the hole big,” he said.
“In the day you could turn in and know that there got a damage in the road but when night time come and nobody ain’t know, what’s going to happen?” the man questioned, explaining that while a temporary fix was provided, with the use of sand, when the it rains the sand is going to wash out and the deep cracks will be revealed again and make the road impassable.
A resident of the area expressed the same sentiment and said that while the temporary fix is appreciated they want the authorities to ensure that the road is permanently fixed as soon as possible. “I don’t know who exactly is in charge of it whether it’s the NDC (Neighbourhood Democratic Council) or the Ministry (Public Infrastructure) but somebody has to do it,” the resident explained.
