City Council to sign deal for parking meters

The Georgetown City Council is expected to ink a deal this week for installation of parking meters in sections of the city to ease traffic congestion.

At the Council’s statutory meeting on Monday, Mayor Patricia Chase-Green announced that the city is working on an agreement with the service provider National Parking Systems, with which an agreement is expected to be signed sometime during this week.

Chase-Green told Stabroek News that talks began with the investors last year under the previous council.  It is unclear how soon the parking meters would be installed following the signing of the agreement.

City Council, Chase-Green said, is currently working to wrap up the discussions and sign an agreement with the service provider. She said she would not release any further information until after the agreement has been reached.

The plans for the installation of parking meters had been pursued by the former City Council to generate revenue. Stabroek News understands that the parking meters can generate between $30,000 and $60,000 per day. During the local government elections campaign, aspiring councillors had talked about plans to have the meters installed around the city to generate needed revenue.
