Woman robbed of $5M at Mahaica, husband arrested

A woman was robbed of $5 million, which she withdrew from a bank for a relative just after mid-day yesterday and her husband is currently in police custody as it is suspected that he staged the robbery.

The incident occurred around 12.15 pm at Belmont, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD) shortly after Radika Doodnauth of Cane Grove, Mahaica visited Scotia Bank, Carmichael Street, Georgetown in the company of her husband and withdrew the money.

Stabroek News understands that Doodnauth was transported to the city bank by her husband, who is a taxi driver, to withdraw the money for a relative who is a rice farmer.

According to reports, as the couple was heading home, the man stopped to purchase food leaving Doodnauth waiting in the car.

As she sat there, a lone bandit approached her and demanded that she pass the money.

But before she could respond, the bandit snatched the bag with the money, which was in the back seat of the car and joined a waiting car.

A police source informed this newspaper that Doodnauth’s husband was taken into custody and is assisting with investigations.
